European American pioneers first moved into the area of Yorkville in 1836. In 1957, the towns of Yorkville and Bristol merged and became known as the United City of Yorkville. However, it is known to many as the town as Yorkville.

Art in City Hall enables local artists to display their creations in the City Hall Council Chambers. The Tax Dodge 5K run/walk and 10K run occurs every April as folks of all ages have a fun run or walk. There are prizes for the top winners for kids, women and men. Ribs on the River gives folks an excellent taste of barbecue ribs from a variety of contestants. There are prizes awarded including a prize for the crowd favorite. Other events in Yorkville include the Illinois Whitewater Festival, Outdoor Movie Night, Hometown Days Festival and the Holiday Under the Stars Fireworks Show.
One of the biggest attractions in Yorkville is Raging Waves, which is the largest water park in Illinois. Located just north of the town, Ranging Waves has over 15 different water slides and a lazy river. Families can watch a sea lion show, eat great food and shop at a gift shop. There is a wave pool and other slides for people of all ages to enjoy. Other popular attractions in town include Silver Spring State Park and Hoover Education Center.
